Inside a Working Tea Estate
The gardens around the resort are working tea, and the New Chumta factory that processes their leaf stands around five hundred and fifty metres from the gate.

The resort sits in tea gardens outside Siliguri, in the Darjeeling district of West Bengal, and the house in them is Tudor: gables and timber, sixteenth-century English at the foot of the hills. MAYFAIR calls this a museum hotel, and the Vintage Bar makes the case, built around a 1928 Ford Model A parked in the room. Bay Leaf serves outdoors among the bay leaf trees it is named for, Rangmahal sets down a full Rajasthani thali, and the estate's own leaf is poured first flush through to the autumnals. On a clear morning after rain, the Himalaya stand up out of the haze.

Through the white gates, the pace drops and the house takes over. Light gathers in the golden coves of the lobby, the wood-panelled corridors are hushed, and the tea bushes in the inner courtyard keep the garden close. By evening the pool bar faces the Darjeeling hills as their lights come out, and the house feels like a museum you are allowed to settle into.Through the white gates the pace drops. Light gathers in golden coves, tea bushes fill the inner courtyard, and at dusk the pool bar watches the lights come out on the Darjeeling hills.

A lounge given over to the estate's own leaf and built for sitting still: the tea from the gardens around the resort, poured slowly for as long as the afternoon lasts.

Fifteen banquet halls, which makes this the largest gathering venue in the MAYFAIR collection and the reason Siliguri's weddings come here. Individual capacities are confirmed with the property.
