Mayfair Palm Beach Resort, Gopalpur-on-Sea

Jewel of the East

Timeless RetreatBy The Bay

Signor Maglioni built Palm Beach in 1914, on twelve acres of the Ganjam coast, and MAYFAIR restored the original 1914 rooms rather than replacing them, their teak floors and writing desks intact. India's first beach resort, it opens onto a private and famously uncrowded stretch of Gopalpur beach, with an infinity pool whose edge dissolves into the Bay of Bengal. 1914, the signature restaurant, is the only Pan-Asian kitchen on this part of the coast, and the chefs work the iron teppanyaki griddle in front of you. At dusk, lamps are lit on the shore for the Samudra Aarti, facing the water.

Mayfair Palm Beach Resort

Palm Beach asks nothing of you but to slow down. Sea air drifts through the verandas, lawns step down to the sand in easy levels, and the blue and white corridors keep a cool, unhurried hush. Mornings open with sunrise across the Bay of Bengal. At dusk the lamps of the Samudra Aarti are lit on the shore, and the evening settles gently into teak and leather at the bar.

Highlights

India's first beach resort still opens onto a quiet stretch of the Bay of Bengal, and from every room the sand is a short walk across the lawns.

An Old Port by the Bay

Gopalpur was a trading port long before it was a resort, from where Kalinga's ships once sailed for Java, Bali and Burma. The British left it a quiet seaside town of a lighthouse, fishing boats and long golden beaches on the Bay of Bengal.

Winter is the time for it, October to February, when the sea is calm and the days are warm and unhurried.
