MAYFAIR Waves, Puri

A Retreat in Coastal Lifestyle

Where Puri'sSand Begins

MAYFAIR Waves stands on the sea front at Puri, with the Blue Flag stretch five hundred metres off and Niladri two hundred and thirty. The fishing boats go out before the light does, and for the first hour after dawn the sand belongs to them. Samudra takes its name from the sea it faces and sets out the buffets: pakhala in summer (rice left overnight in water) and chungdi malai (prawns finished in coconut milk). Shree Jagannath stands two and a half kilometres away and Gundicha a little beyond it: the two ends of the Rath Yatra. Raghurajpur's Pattachitra painters work a short drive inland.

MAYFAIR Waves

At MAYFAIR Waves the sea sets the pace. Lawns and garden slope down to the sand, sea light spills across bright walls and artwork, and nothing rises high enough to crowd the sky. Dawn belongs to the fishing boats, the afternoon to the pool, and the evening to the sea air and dinner outside. It is an easy, sunlit calm, and guests fall into it almost at once.

Highlights

On Puri's sea front, the lawns of MAYFAIR Waves slope straight down to the sand, so the beach is part of every day, from the moment the fishing boats go out.

The Pilgrim Coast

Puri is one of the four holy dhams of India, gathered around the twelfth-century Jagannath temple whose summer chariots draw crowds in the lakhs. Its long golden beach runs beside the Bay of Bengal, and up the coast stands Konark, the thirteenth-century Sun Temple carved as a chariot of the sun.

The pleasant season is October to February, cool and clear for the shore, the temple town and the drive to Konark.
