MAYFAIR Bay Resort, Paradeep

On the Ocean’s Edge

The River,The Sea, The Port

MAYFAIR Bay Resort stands on Marine Drive at Nua Sandhakuda, where the Mahanadi runs out into the Bay of Bengal: a port town's first resort, turned to the working water and the ships waiting in the roads. Fish Market, the seafood restaurant, keeps a mounted sailfish, a teal ceiling and the bay through the windows. Hilsa runs up the river in the monsoon and pomfret and mackerel come off the trawlers at the fishing harbour. Coastal kitchens cook most of it besara: ground mustard, garlic and green chilli. North along the coast is Gahirmatha, the world's largest Olive Ridley nesting beach.

MAYFAIR Bay Resort

Where the Mahanadi slips out into the Bay of Bengal, the busy port town gives way to a contemporary calm. Sea air moves through the palms, the untouched coast runs away to the north, and from the balcony the ships wait out in the roads as the light goes. The sea sets the pace here, and guests find the day slowing gently to follow it.

Highlights

MAYFAIR Bay Resort stands on Marine Drive where the Mahanadi meets the Bay of Bengal, facing the working port, so the ships waiting offshore become part of the evening.

Where the River Meets the Sea

Paradeep stands where the Mahanadi reaches the Bay of Bengal, Odisha's great seaport of ships, river and open horizon. Just up the coast at Gahirmatha the world's largest gathering of Olive Ridley turtles comes ashore, with the Bhitarkanika mangroves and their creeks behind.

The coast is kindest from October to February, cool and dry for the shore and the sanctuaries.
