MAYFAIR Lake Resort stands at Atal Nagar (Naya Raipur), the planned new capital laid out beside the city, and is built along a lake of its own, with an aquapark on the water. Dinner is at Nakli Dhaba, the resort's signature room, where the dals are cooked overnight and the breads come from the tandoor, and which on a Saturday is the hardest table in Raipur. Eleven venues follow, the Mayfair Ballroom, the Regal Ballroom and the Mayfair Lawns among them: central India's wedding address. The spa and the turquoise pool keep their distance from all of it.
With the lake all around, the city falls away at the water's edge. Up the black steps, past the statues of Odisi dancers and beneath the hand-painted canopy, arriving feels quietly ceremonial. Within, carved pillars and velvet drapes hold a soft, warm hush. Outside, badam trees shade the paths towards the lake, and by golden hour on the lawns nobody is in a hurry.With the lake all around, the city falls away.
