MAYFAIR EXPERIENCE
On the sea front

A wheel, wet clay and somebody who has done it since childhood standing over you. Odisha's terracotta is a living trade rather than a heritage exhibit, and an afternoon at it is the closest most guests come to the craft the state is known for.

Cycling on the hard sand at low tide, volleyball once the afternoon cools, and the long walk north towards Chandrabhaga. The Blue Flag stretch is the cleanest and least crowded of them and it is the one nearest the gate.

Shree Jagannath is two and a half kilometres away and Gundicha a little beyond it: the two ends of the Rath Yatra. Raghurajpur, where the Pattachitra painters and palm-leaf engravers work, is a short drive inland.

An outdoor pool in blue tile, with swan fountains along one edge, trees and lawn around it and The Shacks beside it for a drink between swims.

A game of pool for the hottest hours of a Puri day, or for the evening, once the beach has emptied and the sea air has cooled.
Day trips and short drives from Puri, with the travel time to each.

Stone and wood carving in the town, and a village inland where Pattachitra painting is worked in almost every house.

Twelfth-century stone at the heart of the town, and the garden temple the deities are carried to each Rath Yatra.

Lawns and shade in the middle of Puri, a quiet place to sit.
