MAYFAIR World Cup Village, Rourkela

A place of legends

A Village BuiltFor a World Cup

MAYFAIR raised the Village beside the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium to house the national squads of the Hockey World Cup, and has run it to that standard since. It stays the closest place in India to sleep beside that pitch, a short walk from the rooms to the ground. Scoop, the kitchen that cooked for those squads, is now the main table, feeding Rourkela's families and matchday crowds, with Tea Pot through the day, Super Snax for quick orders and the Off Side bar to finish. A temple stands within the grounds, a still corner on an address otherwise given over to matchdays.

MAYFAIR World Cup Village

There is a particular energy to a place built for a World Cup. The Birsa Munda stadium stands next door, and on a match day the whole Village seems to lean towards the pitch. Away from it, the lawns stay green and easy, the pools calm through the afternoon, and the temple within the grounds keeps a still corner, so guests feel the thrill of the game and the quiet that follows it.

Highlights

Raised beside the Birsa Munda stadium to house the national teams of the Hockey World Cup, the Village keeps a tournament's standard for every guest, a short walk from the pitch.

Next Door to Birsa Munda

Next Door to Birsa Munda

Birsa Munda, the Village's immediate neighbour, is the largest hockey ground in the country. On a match day the walk to the pitch is the whole journey.

The Off Side, After the Match

The Off Side, After the Match

The Off Side is named for the call every fan argues with, and it takes the evening after Scoop, the Village's multi-cuisine kitchen, has taken the table.

A Steel City in the Hills

Rourkela was built in the 1950s around one of India's first great steel plants, a planned city where the Koel and the Sankh rivers meet among the hills of tribal Sundargarh. Lately it is a sporting one too, with a new stadium that hosted the Hockey World Cup.

October to February is the season for it, when the hills around are green and the days mild; Khandadhar's falls run their fullest just after the rains.
