MAYFAIR Himalayan Spa Resort, Kalimpong

A Hillside Haven

The Ridge,Kept Warm

The resort stands on the ridge between Darjeeling and Sikkim, above the Teesta valley, taking both the valley view and the mountain one. Its house rule is a fire in every room, the heritage wing's period rooms included. Tiffany carries the main table, Indian, Chinese and continental, cooked for altitude appetites; Mamma Mia keeps the pastry counter under its painted sky for the mist hours; John's Tavern takes the fireside end of the evening. A Swiss Jesuit set up a dairy on this ridge, and the town has made cheese ever since, white and semi-hard inside an edible rind, faintly tangy.

MAYFAIR Himalayan Spa Resort

Arrive past rose bushes and iron fretwork, and the house closes warmly around you: all-wood interiors, locally woven woollen carpets, corridors lined with old pictures, and fires crackling behind their screens. Out on the green deck the Kanchenjunga peaks show themselves and then vanish into cloud. When the wind picks up, the igloo perched there makes a snug corner of it.

Highlights

Built in the early 1900s, this heritage house on the ridge between Darjeeling and Sikkim keeps its regal architecture, with a fireplace in every room for the mountain cold.

A Ridge Above the Teesta

Kalimpong sits on a ridge above the Teesta, quieter than Darjeeling, and for a century it was the last Indian town on the wool road to Tibet. That trade left it monasteries and old mansions, and its cool air made it a town of flower nurseries, with Kangchenjunga over all of it.

Spring and autumn suit it best, March to May and October to November, for the blooms and the clear mountain skies.
